Avoiding work/life breakdown

“If we don’t change the direction we are going, we are likely to end up where we are headed.”
-Chinese Proverb

We are in a crisis in the workplace today. With the increasing speed of change and complexity of our work, combined with technology that is forcing 24/7 availability upon us, it has become extremely challenging for the average person to cope. A simple example is that of a car being driven too fast for too long. Eventually, something is going to break.

Like a car, the symptoms of work/life breakdown are easy to identify:

  • Not finding time to exercise on a regular basis.
  • Working more than 50 hours a week.
  • Not following a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Sleeping less than 7 hours a night.
  • Not having regular quiet time to remove you from the busyness of life.
  • Finding yourself working when on an official vacation from the office.
  • Not feeling in tune with the needs of your family and friends.
  • Not spending quality time with your family and friends.
  • Not finding time to enjoy hobbies or interests outside of work.
  • Not doing anything to increase your spiritual understanding and beliefs.

Who is New Ventures West?

Founded in 1987, New Ventures West offers training programs in Integral Coaching, customized coach training for organizations, executive coaching, and advanced courses for experienced coaches. New Ventures West is ICF accredited (approved by the International Coach Federation), and is recognized in the coaching industry for the quality and depth of its certification process.

What is Integral Coaching?

The focus with Integral Coaching is not as much about being more effective or accomplished in the world (the “what” and the “how” of life), although that often will come about.  The intent is to assess the individual and design a program that provides freedom in their being; in “who” they are in the world. I call this “developing the individual”. This process is very unique to each person, and typically takes a minimum of 3-6 months (meeting bi-weekly) to get deeply connected to the integral process. The outcome of this process is for the client to achieve long-term excellence with an ability to self-correct along the way to stay on track for who they want to be in life.

The coaching process begins with a [free] 45-minute orientation meeting, to make sure there is a mutual fit, and to review the integral process.  A 90-minute intake conversation follows to begin discovering and embracing who the client is. In the next meeting or two, Mike will propose a coaching plan and invite the client to move forward in this development process. This plan involves practices and/or exercises to help the client in self-discovery and self-awareness; to be able to see how they are interacting in the world and to help them discover who they really are inside (heart, body, and head).  Helping clients discover who they are and why they are here is the most exciting part of the journey!

Why a Christian perspective on achieving work/life integration?

If you’ve read Mike’s blog, you might be wondering…  While Mike’s passion for helping people in the work/life integration struggle in Silicon Valley has led him to the coaching profession (see: “The 2×4″), he does look at the world through the eyes of a Christian. The Bible teaches that God uniquely created each of us in His image (Genesis 1:27). Mike’s coaching goal is to help you discover the person that God created you to be.
