Holy Cow—I can hardly believe it! As of January 11, 2025, Surfing in Heaven is officially out in the world. This journey has been nothing short of an odyssey, and today, I’m beyond excited to share that the book is available on Amazon in paperback ($11.99), hardcover ($18.99) and E-book ($6.99) formats.

The Journey

This book came from the deepest recesses of my heart, and I truly believe it was inspired by God. Writing it has changed me from the inside out—it has become my personal testimony.

I’m deeply grateful for each and every one of you who helped me reach the finish line. Whether you supported me through the Kickstarter campaign, encouraged me along the way, or simply cheered me on—thank you! It feels incredible to finally have the book out in the world for anyone to read.

If you missed the launch party on January 11th (or just want to relive the party), this 4-minute video captures the days highlights.

Where It All Began

This journey started exactly 20 years ago, on my 50th birthday. I had a dream—to make a surfing movie. My wife, Marla, agreed to support me, and we filmed Hodads, a fun project that, in my mind, became an instant Hollywood box office success. Ha!

That movie sparked something bigger. It led me to create my website, surfingforbalance.com, and start blogging about surfing, faith, and work-life balance in Silicon Valley. Over the years, that blog evolved into this book.

3 Common Questions About the Book

I keep getting these questions, so here are some quick answers:

1) Is it fiction or non-fiction?
The book is what authors would describe as creative non-fiction. It is mostly a true account of my life growing up as a surfer. The story transitions to Fiction, however, when I encounter Heaven.

2) Is the picture on the cover me?
Nope! That’s my dad, Jack Mulkey. The photo hung in the hallway of our home in Corona del Mar for years. There’s a great story about it in Chapter 2.

3) How can I help you get the word out?
An honest Book Review on GoodReads would mean the world to me!

If you bought the book on Amazon, a review there also helps, but Amazon only counts reviews from verified purchases.

What’s Next?

The upside of this book is huge! 2025 already appears to look jam-packed with my efforts to get the word out to the 29 million surfers worldwide.

Here are a few key marketing projects I will be working on:

🎙 Audiobook Production – I originally planned to hire a narrator, but I keep hearing that I should record it myself. I have some fun ideas for this!

💬 Testimonial Campaign – I’m reaching out to a short list of people to give a 3-word testimonial about the book (“Read This Book!”). Bethany Hamilton is at the top of my dream list.

🎧 Podcast Interviews – I’ve already done a few (check out my press kit), and I’ll be looking for more opportunities to share the story.

📢 Speaking Engagements – I’d love to bring my book launch presentation to church groups, surf shops, libraries, and bookstores. If you know a place that might be interested, let’s talk!

🌊 Website UpdateSurfing for Balance is due for a major refresh—stay tuned for some exciting changes.

📖 Next Book? – I have a rough outline for a follow-up to Surfing in Heaven… but that’s 2026 and beyond. I enjoyed researching and writing about Heaven, so I plan to continue!
